 ""The Once Great Kodak"" 2009-11-30
By budwzr (Cerritos,CA)
I realize that Kodak has been reduced to a kopykat in the marketplace because they (like the cable TV and car companies) thought they were king here in the US, and failed to keep up with technology and consumer demand. It's a shame and embarrassment.

Kodak has yet to come out with ANY digicam that ANYONE that's not a dullard would want to buy.

Why would anyone want to record 1080i on a shaky, handheld digicam? That's just plain useless. 1080i AVC is extremely dense with compression, and editing it is a nightmare.

It's clear that Kodak just wants to "have a bigger number" to throw around compared to Flip. The truth is that 1080i and 720p are indistinguishable even when viewed on a 52" LCD TV, so why bother with all the hassle of 1080?

I looked at this camera and at several of the Flip options. I settled on this one because it seemed to have addressed some of the shortcomings of the Flip and generally to have more features for the money.

This is my first video camera. I didn't want long, boring family videos that would collect dust, but I did want to capture little moments in my newborn son's life to share with family (via Facebook and DVD) and to keep for the future.

So far, this camera is exactly what I wanted -- it is tiny, intuitive to use, and full of features (given its size and price). I have found installing the software and uploading clips to Facebook to be very easy. One really cool feature is that the USB connection flips out of the side of the camera -- no need to carry/remember it to upload software/video clips. The picture quality and the sound are very good so far.

Definitely buy a memory card. The internal memory held one 10-second video clip only.

I bought this camera for a cruise were taking to Alaska next year.

I wanted something small, and yet easy to use and travel with, but

also with high quality video. I read a lot of reviews and

did a lot of research.

For me this does the trick. At the price of 149 buks and a free case

I could not pass it up here.

I strongly suggest that if you buy this make sure you upgrade

the firmware to version 1.06 (latest,as of now). It seems to have

fixed some sound issues. I also purchased a Kingston 32db HDSD Class

4 flash card and it worked nicely.

HDMI to TV is a real treat, the sweet spot is 720p/60 fps. I also

bought an extra battery, cause at an 1 1/2, its not much time.

Well worth it. All the cales come with it, and the Mediasource software

is simple, yet easy to use, and does what I need.

If your thinking about this, its a good choice somewhere between a "flip"

model and a high end system of $500.

 "Zi8: Bad name-great pocket video cam." 2009-11-29

Just got my Zi8 from Amazon and can report this is one sweet and cool piece of pocket-able technology. There have been grumblings about a high pitched whine, but I didn't get that effect out of the box. Just the same, Kodak has a firmware update that addresses this and adds a few other nice tweaks to the operation of this camera, one of which is a smooth rather than stepped zoom. Easily installed, so I did it.

Here is what I've experience so far with the Zi8.

* Good battery life, over 1:40 on a fresh charge recording 720p at 60 frames per second. I got more out of the Zi6, but almost two hours is nothing to sneeze at.

* Sound is good and dare I say similar to the Zi6. I cannot wait to try the external jack. Presently I'm trying to figure out the best one to get--any suggestions?

* Image stabilization works. Not a panacea for shaky hands, but a clear improvement over the Zi6. Did I mention I had stabilization on when testing the battery?

* Awesome screen! It's big, clear and sharp.

* 1080p? This is not the feature I bought it for--oddly enough--but in my tests it worked perfectly. Perhaps useful for videos that max out the digital zoom.

* Uploads quickly to the computer. Quicker IMHO than the Zi6. Wonder why?

* Takes SC memory cards--the new tape of the digital age as prices drop. 8Gb got me about 1:15, recording 720p at 60fps.

* Good build quality, complete accessories which included complete video cabling, power supply and a wrist strap.

* HDMI connection. The only way to watch your 1080p video IMHO.

Over all, a nice upgrade/addition to the Kodak pocket video camera line. The price Amazon had it at was way too good to resist. If it holds up like the Zi6 (two years old now) I should be well served by this product.

Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera (Black) NEWEST MODEL

Bought the suggested SanDisk Ultra II 32GB card along with the Zi8, plugged card in, Zi8 freezes. Called Kodak support and was told Zi8 will only support 16GB right now, and they're working on 32GB capability. I have a 16GB card on order so we'll see. (Can't do much with the camera without a memory card except shoot stills and 9 seconds of video)
